More Hexies

You wouldn't believe how many hexagons/hexie flowers I've made over the years.  Here's yet another way I've used them--a new Bible cover.

Block, Block, who's got the block?

I have.  I've finished 30 blocks I intend to use for my OMG One Monthly Goal.  If you look closely, you can see some of that 'unloved' purple top.  I decided the best thing I could do was to cut it into strips and blocks and use those to make a 'fun' twin size quilt.  I still have a few more things to do before I can put the top all together.  Stay tuned for further updates.  I just want to say for the record that this will be the last time I choose such a large undertaking for my OMG goal.  While it has been fun to create these blocks, I've missed doing other fun sewing because of the pressure.

The colors look a little off but it includes light, medium and dark purple.  And of course you can see the hexie flowers I sewed to the purple top in the hopes of creating that 'fun' quilt.  I shopped for fabric to complete the original purple top but became discouraged because none sparked any ideas or interest for me.  So far, I'm liking this much better.

Where there's a will...

Some of you know I adopted a cat a few months ago from the Humane Society.  She is 1.5 years old and has had a litter of kittens.  She has also nursed 3 kittens in addition to her 4.  So I think since she's come to me, she's stepped out of her 'adult' role and is living her 'kitten' stage.  We've had some adjusting to do.  She's kept me on my toes.  One of the things we've had a problem with is chewing on cords.  Not so much the cords, but the connectors on the ends.  I've found a solution that appears to be working with regards to my iPad power cord.  My apartment doesn't have many outlets so I had purchased a longer power cord.  I decided to try to wrap it in some way since it didn't seem feasible to put it into some sort of channel.  I had some scraps with batting that I had cut off before binding a quilt so I stitched that all along the cord.  It appears that Speckles doesn't like the taste of batting.  I stitched it by hand and left the excess.  Because the cords tend to give out around the iPad connector end, I reinforced a portion of that end using a straw and cable ties.  Here's the result:

Cut The Corners

Yesterday, I spent most of the day working on my OMG - One Monthly Goal September project.  While I am using the original flimsy for the project, I've taken an entirely different path with it.  I'm not sure if I'll post photos along the way or just wait until the end.  The original flimsy was unloved and tucked away in the closet for many years.  Recently I added hexie flowers and was encouraged.  Monday, I shopped for fabric and hoped for inspiration but was unsuccessful.  After watching a ton of Youtube and Crafty videos, I chose a different direction.  So far, I'm delighted with it.  The idea was to turn the flimsy into a fun twin-sized bed quilt.

Scattered

I've bounced around from one project to another these past two days.  Yesterday morning before church,  I moved all my bins & storage racks from the spare bedroom closet to my closet.  That puts all my sewing things in one room.  It seemed as though every time I sat down to sew something or prepare to sew, what I needed was in the other room.  This is much better.

This morning I took an inventory of all my blocks & flimsies.  I'm trying to put them in some sort of logical order.  (like that's going to happen!)

I only sewed one block today from the 501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks book.  It was such a simple block but I couldn't settle in to sew another.

Cotton Reels

I was reading Julie Rose Quilts blog this morning and she wrote about a flimsy that she's had tucked away for a long time because she didn't like it.  I know exactly what she means.  I have one like that. Later, on another blog, I noticed a quilt with a pieced background with huge flowers and leaves appliqued on it.  I began to get a notion that I could do something like that with mine.  As usual, I didn't take a before picture but this is the next step.  I decided to use some of my hexie flowers to embellish the quilt top.

I've sewed a few flowers on and am so excited about it that I tried it on the twin bed and I think it could be a really fun bed quilt.  Who knew that flowers would make the difference?  So I imagine that's where my focus will be for the next few days.

Here a hexie, there a hexie

Everywhere a hexie, hexie...

Yesterday I visited Elm Street Quilts blog.  The post was about hexagons/hexies.  I commented about all the things I've created with my hexies.  Here are a few:

The first two quilts are completed as well as the zippered bag at the bottom of the last photo.  As you can see, I've started another Grandmother's Flower Garden and have many hexagons/hexies finished.  I'd like to make a twin size bed quilt.  I guess you could say I have quite a bit more to do.

On another blog (and I'm sorry I can't remember which one), I commented that I believe a Supreme Slider was the single most help for me to do Free Motion Quilting.  I mentioned that I had learned FMQ years ago, encouraged to try after watching some videos during Leah Day's Free Motion Quilting Project.  At one point I had Leah's book 365 Free Motion Quilting Designs  but have lost it somewhere along the way.  I haven't quilted in quite awhile so I was curious whether I could still do it.  So I took this block I had on hand and quilted it.  Granted it's just a stipple design, but the quilting went pretty well.  As I added the binding it became clear that my binding skills are a little rusty.  I'll have to work on that.
